Ways to Make Your Dental Veneers Last Longer

Dentist Blog

Dental veneers often have a life-changing effect on those who use them. They can restore your smile, make it easier to speak and boost your confidence. Depending on the type you choose, yours should last for between 10 and 15 years. If you want to maximise the amount of time you have with them, it's worth learning about a few tips.

Maintain a Flossing Routine

Your dentist may tell you that it's important to continue with your usual oral hygiene routine after they've placed your dental veneers. If your original routine didn't involve flossing, now's the time to add it in. Flossing removes any food that could become trapped between the ridge that separates your veneer and your enamel. When you remove all the food, you'll prevent dental decay, which prevents the need for a replacement earlier than is necessary.

Try to Quit Smoking

Although many dental veneers aren't susceptible to staining, the area where they meet your tooth's enamel is. Over time, continuing to smoke will result in the discolouration of this region. It may not result in your veneers needing a replacement sooner rather than later, but it will make them look less attractive than before. Additionally, smoking increases your risk of gum disease, which is reason enough to stop doing it.

Rinse After Acidic Beverages

Another habit that weakens your enamel and jeaporidses your dental veneers is drinking acidic beverages. Such beverages include fizzy drinks, fruit juices and wine. Fortunately, rinsing your mouth with water after drinking them goes a long way towards preventing acid from gathering and weakening your enamel.

Take Care During Sports

If you love to play contact sports, you shouldn't let your veneers stop you. However, you should wear a properly fitting mouthguard to reduce the risk of chipping your teeth. Consider using a custom fit mouthguard if you're a regular player, as they feel less abrasive against your gums and therefore comfier to wear.

Avoid Using Teeth as Tools

Many people are guilty of using their teeth to cut string or break off sticky tape. Although you can get away with doing this when you're using your natural teeth, dental veneers are a little more fragile. Resist the urge to use them as tools, and you should find that they last as long as you and your dentist intend them to.

Engaging in a little care goes a long way when it comes to veneers. If you need further advice, make sure you ask your dentist.

Common Health Problems and Solutions

Hello, my name is Catherine and this is my blog all about health and medical topics. I was inspired to start this blog by my husband who works in a hospital. He isn't a doctor, he works in a lab testing blood samples. However, he is extremely interested in medicine. When his grandma got sick, he quickly established what might be wrong and got her all the help she needed. Sometimes is the evening, we sit and read textbooks and talk about medicine. It sounds insane but we both really like it. I decided to start this blog to show off some of what I have learnt.
