3 Ways A Physio Can Help Fix Recurring Shin Splint Problems

Health & Medical Blog

If you have persistent shin splint problems, then you might not be able to run or play sports regularly. You'll have periods where you feel fine and periods when you can't do any exercise at all.

At this stage, it pays to see a physio. They might be able to help you get the problem under control once and for all. How can a physio help fix your shin splint problem?

1. Find The Cause Of Your Problem

Shin splint problems can have various causes. Sometimes, they have a physical cause; other times, they flare up because of mechanical or technical factors.

For example, some people have a physical problem, such as flat feet or a hip issue, which makes them more prone to shin splint pain. Sometimes, people get shin splints because of the way they run. If you have gait problems or a poor running technique then you might unduly stress this part of your legs.

Sometimes, people can get shin splints even though they're in fine physical shape and have no gait problems. For example, people can develop shin splints because they wear the wrong training shoes or only run on hard surfaces.

Your physio can analyse your problem and look for causes. For example, they might run you through a gait analysis. They might want to check over the shoes you wear to run or play sport. They also give you a physical once-over to look for possible contributory problems.

2. Stop The Shin Splint Pain Cycle

Once you have an idea why you might have shin splint problems, then you are in a better position to make long-term improvements. If you can fix the underlying problem, then you reduce the chances of getting shin splints in the future.

For example, if your running gait isn't right, then your physio can help you develop techniques that make running a more natural and comfortable experience. If you have flat feet, then they might recommend that you wear orthotics and/or do some exercises to increase the range of your arches.

3. Get You Fit For The Future

If you've had persistent shin splint problems, then you might need to do some conditioning work on your legs. This will help you deal with your current pain and discomfort.

Your physio can also help you set out a schedule to help you get back to exercising without breaking down again. They can also show you how to do strengthening exercises to fix any underlying physical problems and to make your legs more resilient in the future.

To get started on the road to recovery, make an appointment to see a local physiotherapist.

Common Health Problems and Solutions

Hello, my name is Catherine and this is my blog all about health and medical topics. I was inspired to start this blog by my husband who works in a hospital. He isn't a doctor, he works in a lab testing blood samples. However, he is extremely interested in medicine. When his grandma got sick, he quickly established what might be wrong and got her all the help she needed. Sometimes is the evening, we sit and read textbooks and talk about medicine. It sounds insane but we both really like it. I decided to start this blog to show off some of what I have learnt.
